The film was written and directed by Stuart Urban, and commissioned to mark the tenth anniversary of the Falklands War. The film was closely based on the historical record, and all of the major incidents portrayed were drawn from contemporary accounts by those who took part. Filming took place on the Falkland Islands and at Ealing Studios. Urban is a fluent Spanish-speaker, and plays an uncredited role as the Argentine radio operator.。家住上海的小青年杜小西（严顺开 饰）是饲料厂厂长的公子，可是他却有一个不太好听的外号“阿混”。原来他仗着自己的老子是厂长，所以在厂里游手好闲，无所事事，整日里玩耍闲逛，小日子过得无比惬意。为了适应时代的要求，饲料厂准备进行一次青年职工文化考试。厂长顶不住厂里的压力，承诺要让阿混第一批参加考试。可是吃惯了大锅饭的阿混热衷于打扑克，找各种借口躲避复习，还跑到杭州玩耍，期间还伪装成技术员邂逅了美丽的养鸡姑娘肖梅英。回来的考试中阿混作弊，遭到众人讨伐，再也混不下去的他跑到梅英的家继续混吃等死。 然而没有真本事的人，到哪里都找不到发展的道路……。讲述的是原三江市十五中学校长徐涛一家被下放至桦北县，由于双安中学革委会主任黄二智的介入引起风波，将徐涛一家引入一系列错综复杂的关系和事件中。几代人爱恨情仇的故事也将该剧推向一个个高潮，从而上演了一幕幕非常具有时代特色的篇章。。
