在人声鼎沸的赛马场，五个毫不起眼的赌徒聚在一处，策划一起惊天绑架案。领头的是名不见经传的药店老板物井清三（泉谷茂饰），其兄长清二参与劳工运动被原本供职的日之出啤酒公司解雇，最终一人无依无靠孤独死去。为了替哥哥报仇，物井与赌马认识的四人：前自卫队官员的中年卡车司机布川淳一（板尾创路饰）、在信用金库任职员的在日第三代朝鲜人高克己（高桥努饰）、缺两根手指的年轻车床工人松户阳吉（金子统昭饰）和蒲田警署强行犯搜查系巡察部长半田修平（丰原功补饰），组成了名为“Lady Joker”的犯罪集团，图谋绑架日之出的社长城山恭介（柴田恭兵饰），以勒索高达20亿日元的赎金。而这起绑架事件，在利益关系错综复杂的日之出及其周边激起莫大波澜…… 本片根据高村薰的同名原作改编，2004年曾被拍成电影版上银幕。。山田日後承認在開拍此片之前，已心諳渥美清的肺病步入末期，決定此章為最後一章，並安排由淺丘瑠璃子演的莉莉送寅次郎踏上人生的最後一程。分別15年後，兩人於如詩如畫的奄美大島重逢，感情依舊，鬥氣繼續，沒完沒了似的。正如山田所想，雖然系列必須完結，但始終不想為寅次郎的故事／人生劃上句號。結局如常開放，代表寅一直繼續他的旅程，日本人依然有夢。 公映後翌年，渥美清病逝，享年68歲，本片亦成為他的遺作。 Yamada knew before production began that Atsumi's health has deteriorated to such an extent that Tora-san to the Rescue would be the last film in the series.
