The film's lukewarm reception when first released in France was more a reflection of the public's resistance to Losey's honest portrayal of the country's ill treatment towards the Jews during WWII than a critique on the film's artistic achievement that won MR.KLEIN two Cesar Awards (Best Film and Best Director).。
